Team: Senior Accountant – HR & Payroll

Reports to: Finance Director

Pay Rate: $50,000/year

Service Area: Wilmington, Delaware (Hybrid schedule available)

Travel Required: Statewide, as needed.

Position Type: Full-time, exempt

SENIOR ACCOUNTANT – HR & PAYROLL POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant with a focus on HR and Payroll to oversee and manage key financial functions, including payroll processing, benefits reconciliation, and compliance reporting.

Role and Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of the work performed by the Senior Accountant – HR & Payroll. They are not all-inclusive and may change or expand as organizational needs evolve.

Accounting & Finance:
  • Process vendor invoices, ensuring that all payments are made timely and accurately.
  • Record and manage income revenue, including donations, grants, and other funding sources.
  • Record all financial transactions in the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts monthly.
  • Prepare journal entries and assist with month-end closing processes.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements for audits, ensuring all necessary documents are available and in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards
Payroll Administration:
  • Assist with payroll processing, ensuring accuracy of hours worked, deductions, and employee benefits using [Paycom/GUSTO] or similar system.
  • Address payroll inquiries from employees and provide timely resolutions.
  • Prepare payroll-related reports for management and compliance audits.
  • Manage year-end payroll reporting, including W-2s and 1099s.
HR:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in compliance with nonprofit regulations.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding of employees, including new employee documentation and benefit enrollment.
  • Assist with benefits administration, open enrollment, annual benefit renewals, and retirement plan.
  • Track employee attendance and leave balances (PTO, FMLA) and report discrepancies.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, including tax reporting and required notices.
  • Provide support for employee performance management and compensation reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of accounting experience, including payroll processing and HR-related financial duties, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, payroll regulations, and state/local employment laws.
  • Proficiency in payroll software(e.g., Paycom, Gusto), accounting software(QuickBooks), and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid billing is highly preferred.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with employees and external partners.
