Director of External Affairs

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of External Affairs leads the organization’s strategy and execution for all outward-facing relationships, including government relations, public affairs, donor development, and external communications. This role serves as a key advisor to executive leadership, ensuring that the organization’s mission, policies, and initiatives are effectively communicated to external stakeholders.

KEY Responsibilities

1. Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s external affairs strategy aligned with overall organizational goals.
  • Advise senior leadership on political, regulatory, and reputational matters.
  • Manage and mentor the external affairs team, including communications, government relations, and community engagement staff.

2. Government & Public Affairs

  • Build and maintain relationships with government officials, regulatory agencies, and policy influencers.
  • Track and analyze legislative and policy developments that may impact the organization.

3. Communications & Public Relations

  • Oversee media relations strategy, ensuring consistent messaging in organization branding, press releases, interviews, and social media.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the press and external partners.
  • Monitor media coverage and public sentiment, adjusting strategy as necessary.

4. Development

  • Develop and implement an annual and multi-year fundraising plan aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead all major fundraising efforts, including annual campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants.
  • Manage donor databases and ensure accurate tracking of contributions and engagement.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities.
  • Oversee or prepare grant proposals and ensure timely submission.
  • Track grant requirements, deadlines, and reporting obligations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Public Policy, Communications, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of experience in external affairs, government relations, public affairs, or strategic communications.
  • Proven experience building relationships with policymakers, media, and community leaders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong strategic thinker with demonstrated leadership and project management abilities.
